Grievance Committee

This committee is comprised of all component* shop stewards. The chair of the committee is the Chief Shop Steward.
Elected shop stewards are responsible for dealing with member issues in the workplace. These issues may include, representing members who are disputing the employer's discipline process, investigating the employer's concerns regarding employees and defending the rights of members within our collective agreement.

Shop stewards are also responsible for handling grievances as defined in the collective agreement: Article 11: Grievance Procedures.

The committee meets on a regular basis to discuss ongoing grievances, determine a course of action and make recommendations to the executive. For example, when there is no settlement by step 3 of the grievance procedure the union has the option to proceed to arbitration. In this instance it is the responsibility of the committee to determine the facts of the grievance and recommend to the executive whether the grievance should be submitted to arbitration.
